Singing Science is a Cambridge, UK based idea that is the brainchild of Rishi from Karmadillo. It started when working at The Department of Plant Sciences at The University of Cambridge, he composed a song using Arabidopsis thaliana, a small plant that does loads of hard-work in the field of science, as a metaphor for how hardworking scientists often fail to get public recognition. This was released as part of an album of songs under the moniker of Professor Karmadillo.

Rishi now combines his livelong love of science and passion for music in his role as Creative Director at Singing Science, composing musical mini-lectures and longer musicals. It started off with the idea of being an informative yet comedic light-entertainment show, and has evolved into forms suitable for students as well as the general public.

Rishi’s background in genetics includes a decades worth of experience as a bioinformatician, mainly with Ensembl, and as a Programme Manager for GA4GH, a global network developing and enabling standards for discovery and sharing of genetic data. However he started off as a mathematician, and specialized in acoustic noise cancellation. There was also a stint setting up an updated Computer Science program in the Caribbean with Voluntary Service Overseas, a wonderful part of his life that left him with a love of rum.
